We just got the news that Sean got a full scholarship at California College of Art in San Francisco and a $16000 scholarship annually to OTIS College of Art and Design for this fall 2020. Sean also has been offered admission to USC  with 1st-year completion at PCC.  So happy for you! 😊

2nd week in Design and Independent Project Class.  Takako with fashion+fine art major began the student initiated project. We began by exploring the materials and ideas going around thrifty shops in the 1st week. We began to put found materials and ideas into a physical form in the 2nd week.

Sean Natarajan, a senior at La Canada High School has joined VAS in summer 2019. Sean's 1st project with his great interest and motivation in Star Wars has been going really well. Another great example of "learning is fun and fulfilling."

Takako arrived from Tokyo, Japan about 2 weeks ago to learn at VAS. Takako has a BFA degree in media and plans to study further to pursue the career in fashion+fine art.

These pieces of eucalyptus bark have been collected for study of form. Then, incorporated and  created into the composition for the  study  of "Organic Form with monochrome."

Students are challenged

1. to mix warm colors for the light values and cool colors for dark values,

2. crop all 4 sides in composition by scaling up from the life size

3. use cross-contour lines to reinforce the structure

UC는 오는 8월 1일부터 공개되는 2019년도 지원서부터 디자인과 내용을 대폭 변경했다고 밝혔다. 특히 앞으로 수상기록과 특별활동 항목에 대한 심사가 강화될 것으로 보여 UC 지원이 좀 더 까다로워질 전망이다.

UC 관계자는 "이번 지원서 개정을 통해 가장 크게 바뀌는 내용은 수상기록과 특별활동 항목이다. 그동안은 지원자의 과외 활동 내용을 제한했지만 올해부터 이를 없앴다"며 "고등학교 4년동안 시간을 어떻게 활용하고 어떤 결과를 얻었는지 구체적으로 확인하면 좀 더 다재다능한 학생들을 선발할 수 있을 것으로 기대한다"고 설명했다.

Jay submitted  art work to Congressional Art Competition. While preparing for the competition, she learned much about how to frame and most importantly how to present her work. Jay has won the 3rd place. Her  art work will be on display until 2020 in the office of Rep. Adam Schiff in Burbank. Congratulations!

I have a wonderful news to share today.

"The Pencil Scholarship in memory of Nathan Pak"

Nathan was my student at VAS in the early 2000. While I was teaching at OTIS, Nathan was a sophomore in Digital Media department and passed away 13 years ago. 

​

It awards multiple talented students each academic year who are passionate about the visual and media arts at Pasadena Community College. After 13 years, Nathan's mother and Janice, Nathan's younger sister have created this scholarship. A Caltech professor (who wishes to remain anonymous) and his family have made their initial donation.

​

An email came from Kristin.  She has been having a challenging year in bachelor degree program at Saint Martins,  more fast paced than foundation year was. Her design will be participating in a runway showing this December, called the White Show!

On the National Portfolio Day at Cal Art on October 21, 2017, Sheryl Liu was offered an admission and a merit full scholarship from SAIC, School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

We have not begun the application submission to colleges yet, and it is a great start.

Kristin Son has completed the college-prep course successfully. It has been over 2 year journey. We've applied to PRATT in New York, PARSONS in New York, OTIS College in Los Angeles, and the interview has been scheduled with Central Saint Martin in London on February 24, 2017.

Change of  Policy on College Prep Course at VAS as of August 2016

The group class will be available through January 2017. 

​

Beginning Februay 2017, VAS will no longer provide a group class of "College Portfolio Prep." 

VAS will only provide a private lesson/mentoring to up to 4 students per year.  This is an intensive course with a curriculum designed specifically for students who are ready for a high level of learning+challenge through art projects and have a firm determination for working toward college admission and career in art+design field in future.

Hannah Kim has successfully completed a freshmen year at RISD. And, she will be a TA during this summer at VAS.

It is rather late to post. But, better late than never. Jieun was a receipient of OTIS Presidential Scholarship, but her 1st choice was Parsons. After PARSONS, Jieun has been working as a designer in men's wear at Calvin Klein in New York since 2009.

David Yoo, a RISD graduate in Apparel Design,  has been with GAP  men's wear in New York since 2013.

Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must be of African American, Asian, Latino/Hispanic, Native American, or Pacific Islander descent; be currently enrolled undergraduates; have completed at least one semester of college by June 2015; reside or attend college in Los Angeles County; and be a United States citizen or permanent resident. Students graduating in May or June 2015 are also eligible. (Students who are enrolled in a second BA or BS program are not eligible.)

Terms
This is a full-time (40 hours/week), consecutive, 10-week-long internship, with a salary of $4,000. Earliest start-date is June 1 and must conclude no later than August 21, 2015.
